How to make Peanut Halawa ( Halva treat)

Peanut Halawa, also known as Halva, is a popular sweet treat enjoyed in various forms across the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia, including Ethiopia. Ethiopian Halawa typically combines sugar, butter, and flour to create a dense, sweet, and slightly nutty confection. Here's how to make it:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional, for flavor)
  • 1/2 cup toasted sesame seeds or chopped nuts (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Syrup
    • In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and lemon juice.
  2. Boil
    • Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Reduce heat
    • Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat and let it simmer without stirring for about 10-15 minutes, or until the syrup thickens slightly. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Toast the Flour
    • In a large, heavy-bottomed pan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
  5. Add Flour
    • Add the flour gradually, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
  6. Cook well
    • Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the flour turns a golden brown color and emits a nutty aroma. This can take 10-15 minutes. Be patient and ensure the flour does not burn.
  7. Combine Flour and Syrup
    • Once the flour is well-toasted, gradually add the prepared syrup to the flour mixture. Be careful as the mixture will bubble and steam.
  8. Stir well
    • Stir continuously until the syrup is fully absorbed and the mixture comes together into a thick, smooth paste.
  9. Add Flavoring
    • Stir in the ground cardamom if using. This adds a warm, aromatic flavor to the halawa.
  10. Add toasted sesame seed (optional)
    • If desired, you can also stir in some toasted sesame seeds or chopped nuts at this stage for added texture and flavor.
  11. Shape and Cool
    • Pour the halawa mixture into a greased or parchment-lined baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  12. Let it cool
    • Allow it to cool completely at room temperature. You can also refrigerate it to speed up the cooling process.
  13. Cut the Halawa
    • Once cooled, cut the halawa into squares or diamonds.
  14. Garnish and Serve
    • Garnish with additional toasted sesame seeds or chopped nuts if desired.
  15.  Serve
    • Serve the halawa as a sweet treat with coffee or tea.
