Ingredients Needed

For the Cake:

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Cherry Filling:

  • 1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling or 2 cups fresh or frozen pitted cherries
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (if using fresh or frozen cherries)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cherry liqueur or brandy (optional)

For the Whipped Cream:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
